Shenzhen Flower Deliveries Challenge Mong Kok Market, Local Shops Fight Back
Mong Kok Flower Market is facing increased competition from low-priced flower bouquets delivered from Shenzhen, prompting local shops to adopt creative strategies to attract customers.
Jessica, founder of the long-standing Mong Kok florist “Baili Floral Art,” reports that business has dropped by roughly 40% year-on-year. Shenzhen florists offer cheap bouquets delivered directly to Hong Kong, often coordinating hand-to-hand pickups at MTR stations for a modest fee. While significantly cheaper than local offerings, these bouquets are often smaller and show signs of damage, such as bruised petals, according to local florists.
To revive foot traffic, Mong Kok florists are experimenting with auctions and promotions. One shop, “Colourful Flowers,” holds weekday auctions starting from HK$10 for bouquets and HK$1 for potted plants or accessories. Despite rainy weather, these events have drawn crowds, with customers purchasing high-end roses for a fraction of their original price.
The Hong Kong Flower & Potted Plant Wholesalers Association, in collaboration with the Urban Renewal Authority, plans a “Coffee & Flowers” festival to encourage visits and boost sales at the market.
Local consumers note that while Shenzhen bouquets are more affordable, they often prefer selecting flowers in person for freshness and quality. Experts also remind that imports of protected plant species require government permits, even for popular flower varieties.
As Shenzhen deliveries grow, Mong Kok florists are innovating to maintain relevance, combining auctions, festivals, and personalized services to keep the market vibrant.
